From the Diamond to DVD: The Yankles Partners with Magnolia PictureS A Unique Baseball Comedy-Drama (2009)

The Yankles (2009) is an independent comedy-drama that tells the story of a former baseball star who takes on the challenge of coaching a college baseball team at an Orthodox Yeshiva. The film blends humor, heart, and sportsmanship, exploring themes of faith, perseverance, and unexpected community bonds. Produced by DZB Productions, the movie was filmed in Utah, featuring a predominantly Mormon cast alongside stars such as Brian Wimmer, Bart Johnson, and Don Most. Although it premiered at several film festivals, including the Bel-Air Film Festival, the film did not receive a theatrical release. Distribution efforts were led by Marc Falcone of Trendsetters, who partnered with DZB Productions to seek out opportunities to reach a wider audience. Falcone played a pivotal role in initiating the DVD agreement with Magnolia Home Entertainment, owned by Mark Cuban, following discussions with Jeff Cuban. This strategic move brought the film to a broader audience, culminating in its DVD release in 2012. Early production received seed backing from notable investors, including Michael Morhaime, the legendary American video game developer and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, highlighting the project’s appeal across industries. Shot in Utah but resonating with audiences beyond, The Yankles stands out as a faith-driven sports story that connects cultural communities through the universal language of baseball, showcasing the power of independent filmmaking and the importance of strategic distribution partnerships.
